The first and foremost consideration on the seventh-grade river trip is student safety. While on or near the water, students are always required to wear their Personal Flotation Device (PFD).
The guides on each raft are certified by the state of Utah as whitewater river guides. All adults on the trip are trained in basic first aid/CPR and many are Wilderness First Responders. Each pod carries a satellite phone and a GPS emergency locator device. The pod is able to contact an adult “safety camper” who camps along the river route. This person also carries a satellite phone and is in place to assist the rafters. The safety camper can also be in contact with local emergency or medical personnel. On the river, several experienced kayakers follow the rafts to provide support as the rafts go through a series of rapids.
The weather in Utah can range from hot and dry to cold and rainy in May. Students will be asked to be prepared for all conditions as this will ensure their safety and pleasure while on the trip.
If you are a parent of a child with specific medical needs, please contact the trip leader as soon as possible. This would include any child with allergies, prescription medications, or a unique medical situation.
