Our in-class curriculum ties to the Arches trip may include some or all of the following:
Reading: “Just-right” non-fiction on deserts, erosion, the environment, or weather
The novel, Desert Solitaire, by Edward Abbey is one example
Writing: Journal writing, before, during, and after the trip
Note-taking to use for poetry, a fictional piece about life in the desert, or a fictional narrative
Descriptive writing that is illustrated with drawings or paintings
Math: Pre-trip budget, pre-trip menu planning, mapping, coordinates, altitude, distance, temperature
Social Studies: Learning of the original inhabitants of the area, and survival skills in the desert
Science: Desert ecology studies, geology, weather, erosion
Art: Illustration of poems with a variety of media
Connections to the Arches National Park staff and exhibits: Students will have the opportunity to view exhibits and visit with staff to learn more of the Arches history and environment.
