Sending children into the wilderness can be a daunting thought. At Aspen Middle School, the safety of our students is our first priority. All of our leaders have either completed an 80-hour Wilderness First Responder training, which has given them the knowledge and skills to navigate many of the accidents and illnesses that occur in the backcountry, or CPR/Advanced First Aid courses.
Our leaders are also well versed on the trails they are hiking and are knowledgeable about prominent features, campsites and evacuation routes from their trails. Each patrol has a "sister patrol" that hikes on the same trail and is camped nearby. Sister patrols can lend a hand of support, if needed, and is one of the added safety features of this trip. Patrols carry satellite phones and/or GPS locating devices in the event of an emergency.
At Basecamp, our students participate in climbing, rappelling and ropes activities. These activities are always set up and run by professional mountain guides, many of whom have earned their designation through the American Mountain Guide Association.
The autumn weather in Colorado can be hot, cloudy and rainy, or snowy. Students will be asked to be prepared for all conditions as this will ensure their safety and pleasure while on the trip.
If you are a parent of a child with specific medical needs, please contact the trip leader as soon as possible. This would include any child with allergies, prescription medications, or a unique medical situation.
