Traveling to the desert in autumn requires that we are prepared for warm (maybe hot) conditions or cold and rainy weather. If students are prepared with the proper clothing and equipment, they will be comfortable and safe.
Warm weather requires that students be aware of applying sunscreen, wearing hats, and staying well hydrated. Cooler conditions means that staying dry is essential. We spend a good deal of time, prior to the trip, helping the students to be aware of these measures. Safety was the top priority when we created our procedures and clothing/equipment lists. With this in mind, students are encouraged to be more self-sufficient in terms of eating well, drinking liquids, dressing for the current environment, staying dry, and being aware of weather conditions.
Trip leaders are experienced in leading trips to Arches, are aware of desert safety considerations, have completed CPR/Advanced First Aid, and many are Wilderness First Responders. While there is sporadic cell phone service in Arches, we carry GPS emergency locator devices, and can be in touch with local park and/or emergency officials very quickly.
If you are a parent of a child with specific medical needs, please contact the trip leader as soon as possible. This would include any child with allergies, prescription medications, or a unique medical situation.
