The skis we use are a hybrid cross country/telemark ski that have metal edges and scales on the bottom to enhance climbing up hills. All skis, boots, and climbing skins are provided for the students. The Aspen Ski Swap has allowed us, with grants, to purchase this equipment. Students are asked to provide ski poles, all clothing, backpacks, and a sleeping bag. If your child is going on this trip, you will be provided with two equipment lists. One is for the day trips and the other is for the hut trip. Many years have gone into refining this list, so if everything is included in a student’s pack, he or she should be well prepared. Staying warm and dry are essential for having a safe and enjoyable experience. Extra clothing or equipment means more weight that a student must carry.
While it is important to have the right clothing, it need not be brand new. Many families and students have participated in this program and quite often borrowing gear is workable solution. The local mountaineering stores have rental programs for backpacks and sleeping bags. In addition, the sixth grade teachers can assist students with obtaining clothing and/or equipment.
